Desire is an interesting thing. Its power is strong.
It has the ability to govern our steps, even when we aren’t able to identify it by name.
In this industry, if you asked one hundred different people why they wanted to open a gym, you’d most likely get one hundred different answers.
“The 9 to 5 corporate rat race wasn’t for me”; “I needed to get out of the house and start something for other people”; “The gym I was working out in changed my life”; “I wanted to be able to be able to workout every day and that be my job”; “I wanted to create a community”; “What started out as a few people in my garage turned into a real business” – and the list continues.
I have to say, this industry fascinates me. I’ve had countless conversations with gym owners who, in one way or another feel “stuck”.
A lot of people start a gym for really good reasons, but then life happens.
Or they realize the business experience they don’t have sure would be useful. The gym grows quickly and there are no systems in place to manage the growth. The gym stagnates, and there is not enough revenue to pay the bills, let alone their salary. What they envisioned to be a massive success, turns into their worst nightmare. That nagging thing that keeps them up at night… every night.
We all make choices – every day – that are based on something beneath the surface level.
It’s funny, actually. There are some things in our life that we are wildly disciplined about, and nothing could alter our routine. But then there are others that we just keep putting off. Just this week we heard “I know I need to do this, but I just haven’t.”
So why not? Why do we allow ourselves to be paralyzed by fear or inactivity in certain areas. The risk is too big? Movement forward will cause too much pain or discomfort? It is too hard to take that first step?
The question you need to ask yourself is… What would you tell your members? Most likely something like, “One day at a time.” “Just take the baby step.” “Push yourself as hard as you can today, and then 10 tomorrows from now, you’ll be at a different place.”
Same rules apply to you.
But, as the famous quote goes, “Your desire to change must be greater than your desire to stay the same.” Until someone is really ready to stop doing the same thing, the same way, expecting different results, it’s going to be business as usual. Every time.
So, what needs to be different in your gym? In your personal life? With your relationships?
Purpose in your heart that you’re done with making excuses. Decide that saying “it’s too hard” isn’t an option. It really is your choice.
This weekend in Charleston,SC we had the 39th Annual Cooper River Bridge Run. Two paraplegics walked the entire 6.2 miles. Google it… it was an amazing sight to watch.
The incredible thing about each and every one of us is that our limits are not where we think they are.
Define your frustrations, your challenges, and your opportunities, and then surprise yourself and others by exceeding your expectations.
I absolutely love this quote by Albert Camus, “In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.”
Your summer is there. Look for it. Let new growth happen. Decide today to make a change. You already know it’s not going to be easy. You’re going to have to make some sacrifices.
But, if you really want things to be different, they can be. It’s up to you. No more excuses.
